How to calculate a business name number
- Write the name exactly as customers will see it (on signs, the website and invoices).
- Convert each letter with the Pythagorean table below. Ignore spaces and punctuation.
- Add all the values and reduce the total to one digit, keeping 11, 22 or 33.
- Optionally repeat with the Chaldean table, which many name consultants prefer.
| Value | Letters |
|---|---|
| 1 | A, J, S |
| 2 | B, K, T |
| 3 | C, L, U |
| 4 | D, M, V |
| 5 | E, N, W |
| 6 | F, O, X |
| 7 | G, P, Y |
| 8 | H, Q, Z |
| 9 | I, R |
Example: Sunrise Bakery
- Pythagorean: letters add up to 59 → 5 + 9 = 14 → 1 + 4 = 5
- Chaldean: letters add up to 38 → 3 + 8 = 11 → 1 + 1 = 2
Pythagorean 5, Chaldean 2 (compound 38)

Practical checks that matter more than the number
A name number is a matter of taste. These checks decide whether a name will actually work:
- Is the name easy to say, spell and remember?
- Is the domain name available, and are the social media handles free?
- Does a trademark search show a conflict in your country and industry?
- Does the name mean something unfortunate in another language your customers speak?
If two names pass these checks equally well, the numerology can be a tie-breaker.
Frequently asked questions
Which number is best for a business name?
There is no single best number. Numerologists match the number to the type of business: 8 is popular for finance and 3 for creative work. Many people like 1, 3, 5, 6 or 8.
Should I use the Pythagorean or Chaldean system for a business name?
Name consultants, especially in India, often prefer Chaldean because it focuses on how the name sounds. Our calculator shows both so you can compare.
Does adding a letter to a name change its luck?
It changes the number, which is why some people adjust spellings. There is no evidence that it changes how a business performs.
