AngelSign treats A, E, I, O and U as vowels and Y as a consonant. Some authors count Y as a vowel when it sounds like one, which can change the Soul Urge and Personality numbers.
Did Pythagoras invent it?
The system is named after Pythagoras of Samos (6th century BCE), whose followers taught that numbers explain the order of the world and linked particular numbers with qualities such as justice. That much is well documented.
The letter chart above, however, is modern. It was set out by writers in the early 20th century, notably L. Dow Balliett, and there is no evidence that Pythagoras used anything like it. "Pythagorean" is best read as a tribute, not a historical claim. See our methodology page for sources.
