| Personal Year | Birth month and day + current year | The theme of the current year in a 9-year cycle |

Worked example: March 12, 1990
Life Path
- Month: March = 3
- Day: 12 → 1 + 2 = 3
- Year: 1990 → 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19 → 1 + 9 = 10 → 1 + 0 = 1
- Total: 3 + 3 + 1 = 7
Life Path 7
Birthday number
- Day: 12 → 1 + 2 = 3
Birthday number 3
Personal Year for 2026
- Month: 3
- Day: 3
- Year: 2026 → 2 + 0 + 2 + 6 = 10 → 1
- Total: 3 + 3 + 1 = 7
Personal Year 7
So this person has a Life Path 7 (thoughtful, analytical), a Birthday number 3 (a gift for expression) and is in a reflective Personal Year 7 in 2026.
When your birth date gives a master number
If the month is November (11), or the day is the 11th, 22nd or 29th, or any total lands on 11, 22 or 33, numerologists keep that master number instead of reducing it. Our calculators do the same and show you where it happened.
People born on the 29th, for example, have a Birthday number of 11, because 2 + 9 = 11.
Another way to read a birth date: the Lo Shu grid
Chinese numerology places every digit of your birth date on a 3×3 grid and looks at which numbers are missing or repeated. It is a different method from the Life Path, so it gives a different kind of reading. Try the Lo Shu grid calculator or read the Lo Shu guide.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Life Path the same as the date of birth number?
Yes. When people say "date of birth number" they usually mean the Life Path, calculated from the whole birth date.
Does the time of birth matter in numerology?
No. Western numerology uses only the date. Birth time matters in astrology, not numerology.
Which date format should I use?
It does not matter whether you write the date as day-month-year or month-day-year; the digits and the result are the same.
